2021.09.28 15:52 nun_atoll The Sundering
There was talk, among those in power, of setting royal foresters on the woodland where Robin Hood and his fellow outlaws stayed. Of course, as is the way with many a governmental matter, the idea was bogged down by endless discussion and debate. Now and then a noble, tired of waiting for the king to do something, would hire someone, a mercernary or a freebooting knight, to go and clean up the problem. These hired men never seemed to return with their quarry; likely many of them absconded with their initial payment or were distracted by other, even more lucrative work.
It was not so much that the outlaws lived in total peace, with no fear of capture or punishment. It was only that very little real effort was going in to capturing them.
Now and then Robin would worry, and would implore some of his little troupe to go back into the world. There were those among them who might just manage to gain some pardon, or who had the wherewithal to leave England somehow.
Scathelocke, for example, might well go back to his father's house and be welcomed, or might go to France where he had cousins. He would not leave, however, because he knew many who might take him in and help him would not do the same for his beloved Mag, or for the son she had borne. Scathelocke also would not leave the greenwood without his half-brother Stutely, and Stutely would not go unless and until Robin could go.
The real problem, as Robin saw it, was that the little band of outlaws and hangers-on had truly become a family, willing to fight and die together, to fight and die for eache other. That was a most excellent thing when it meant cohesion of the group during a job, but it was worrisome when sometimes the walls around them seemed to be closing in.
One day, somewhere in the last swelter of summer, the outlaws stopped yet another unwary party of travellers on the road. All seemed typical first. Money and valuables were handed over with a minimum of fuss and complaint, and the outlaws were prepared to be on their way soon enough — until a figure in the travel party, a simply-dressed fellow they had taken for a servant, let out a cry and a band of armed and armoured men came charging along from just past a bend of the road.
The servant leapt from his horse, kicking Little John hard in the shin, sliding past Gilbert and Renaud's attempted interception, and slashing at Achmed with a nasty-looking, slim-bladed dagger. Robin cried out.
The servant laughed, his hood falling back to reveal that he was Baron Calmin. While the other men in the riding party had dismounted and joined the soldiers in trying to fight Robin's men, Calmin went straight for Achmed himself.
Robin was clouted over the head and fell a moment into the dust, eyes blurry, before turning himself over, kicking out at his attacker, and fumbling to his feet. Achmed, meanwhile, was holding his own against his former employer, but he had taken a few more slashes to the side and hands before, quite suddenly, an arrow whizzed by and hit the baron in the neck.
Now Achmed himself was not sure whether it was Robin or another who shot the fatal arrow, but in the moment he did not care, simply joining the others and turning to scatter into the woodland.
They all stayed hiding until the next morning, just as a precaution, but the soldiers and others did not follow far into the woods, and the new day dawned silent aside from the singing of birds.
When most of the raid party had straggled into Home Camp, Robin saw it was not all of those who had gone out the day before. Later, they would find that Gamell Gole had not made it back with them, being beaten nearly to death by the others and taken to pay for all their crimes. There were others missing as well: Wat, Cloche, and a handful of others who fell on the road, or just within the woods, or who had dragged themselves, in spite of everything, to one of the troupe's little bolthole camps and were there still, either dead or nearly so.
In the week after, a life or two would be saved. Others would not, and those would be respectfully and properly buried. In a daring raid, Renaud, John, and a young recruit crept from the woods and rescued Gamell, who had not been punished yet. It was that rescue party who brought news that Baron Calmin's brother, the new Baron Calmin, was determined to send people out to seek the heads of Robin and Achmed.
"For he saith, Rob," John explained, "that tha'rt a rogue and murderer, and that Achmed is a faithless heathen bent on leading us out to kill all good Christians."
Now, of course, none of what was being said was true. Still, it would make things difficult for the band, to say the least. For a few days, Robin and Achmed vanished into the depths of the woods together, and after a time, the outlaws began to suspect they had turned themselves in.
They had not. Rather they had secreted themselves out of the way for a time, talking deeply about what must be done. When they had talked it all through, two or three times, they at last returned to the others.
"There is no safety in England now," Robin said. "Not for m'self, nor Achmed, nor none of us. We have broken the laws of the king, and a day will come when the last of us will be hunted down like beasts. "I cannot allow this for thee, my friends. Perchance if I leave, and tha all lie low a time, tha may go back to living quiet lives."
Now there was protest, and vowing of loyalty, and confused questioning, but Robin raised his hand.
"No more will I risk thy lives, my friends. My family. I'd no right ever to do it. No, I must go my way, and tha must all go thine."
"Rob!" Stutely cried. "Rob, tha'rt my best friend all my days. I've no other friend but thee!"
"Thou hast me, brother," Scathelocke smiled, and put a hand on Stutely's shoulder.
"And me," Mag agreed.
"We all have been friends," Renaud said, "and family. Mayhap we shall find a way to continue on as such, even after all this."

2021.09.28 15:52 RoBb0sS Sometimes
when I'm out painting something beyond words will walk or slither, float or hop into my composition and maybe even stop and share that space with me even though i can feel its unrest and suspicion, denying the urge to capture it, i just have to stop and appreciate the moment knowing exactly how it makes me feel. How I'm describing it in my head. All of the reasons i love it exactly how it is. I would change nothing. knowing that if i did, it would become something conceptualized. That would become its flaw. Its limitation. Its confusion. Its insult. Its comparison. Its wound. Its playback. Or new fear. A reason to trust or not. To properly navigate it's existence. a reason to fear or not. For now I'll just give it a moment of silence while its still here with me. And that its honestly the best i can do. And I'm the only one who just witnessed what happened and that i keep it close to my heart. Even in a time like this when fear no longer informs my thoughts. A time when destroying (our only talent) would be too easy. I only feel the fear of missing out on an opportunity to see you. The real you.
I'm sorry that's why we're not speaking.
I'm sorry too that also applies to the rest of the world.
I'm sorry that there's so so, so much more.
And for that too,

I've been thinking about sharing this story for a while now and finally decided to sit down and write it. It happened to a family friend who is a catholic priest and I heard the story a while ago but I'll try to remember as many details as I can and I hope I won't get anything wrong.
So to set a scene; this happened in a small town (I can't remember the name of... It was something on a Š so I'll refer to it as a Š Town for clarity through the story) in Croatia sometimes in the late 90s. The catholic priest friend who we will call Marko was sent to the parish of the Š Town to hold the masses in the local church. As a catholic priest, he was given a room in a nearby house that served as a Parish Office. While he was moving what he had of his stuff and clothes into the office an old man approached him and told him that he wouldn't be able to sleep there. Marko looked at him for a second but didn't really take him seriously. Why wouldn't he be able to sleep here? He's just an old man about to tell him some local legend. Since he was busy with setting up in the new office he ignored the man and went on with his day, forgetting about the short conversation. That night he went to sleep in his small room. Now, from what I remember when he described the office, his bedroom was on the first floor, the actual office was on the bottom floor along with a small chapel, and there was a basement under that that wasn't really used for anything except storage. So, he went to bed and fell asleep. And at 1 am he was woken up by strange noises. He woke up, startled by the sound that was echoing through the house and he soon became aware of the soft thumps and moaning and crying and an occasional scream. He sat in his bed for a second, eyes wide as he looked around the dark room. He didn't see anything and he stood up, now fully awake and sure he wasn't imagining anything. The old man from the day before came to his mind and he thought for a second how he told him he wouldn't be able to sleep here. He decided that it must be local kids playing a prank on him. They saw a new priest and they knew of the local legends and so they must've come here tonight to try and scare him. He took his flashlight that stood beside his bed and opened the doors and went into the hall, still hearing all the moaning and crying and screaming. He checked the first floor, turning on the lights as he went, no one was there. He checked the bottom floor, turning on the lights as he went, no one was there. As he was walking around the bottom floor he realized that the sounds were coming from the basement and so he slowly went into the basement. The sounds didn't stop, they were louder and immediately he felt like he was being watched, he was filled with dread, and as soon as he made sure that there was no one down in the basement he rushed out, closed the doors, and went back into his room where he stayed until the morning, awake and listening to all this screaming and moaning until it stopped as the sun came out. As soon as it did he went out of the house, intent on finding the old man from the day before because he obviously knew something. He found him as soon as he went out, right outside of the office and he looked at him, a bit puzzled before he started talking to him. It turned out that the old man was the bell ringer of the church and he walked past that house every night and heard the sounds coming from it and he knew all the previous priests that in the end never slept in the office for as long as they were here. They would all try to sleep there and nearly all of them fled the office as soon as the night fell after the first night they were there. As it turned out the house was a place of a massacre in World War II and the priest that was there at the time along with several nuns were killed in the basement of the house and it has been haunted ever since. Marko was stubborn and since he told the bell ringer the first day that 'of course, he'll sleep there' he planned on sleeping there. So the next night, he lied in his bed, turned off all the lights, and went to sleep. At 1 am the screaming started again and it went on and on with the thumping and screaming and crying and moaning until the sun went up the next morning. He went about his day, doing his duties as a priest, tired and more than a little unnerved from the previous two nights. Later that day, when he found the bell ringer he told him that he plans to hold a Gregorian Mass each night at 3 am for the next 30 days and asked if the bell ringer wanted to come. The bell ringer agreed and that night at 1 am the noises started and at 3 am the bell ringer arrived at the office, Marko let him in and they went into the chapel where Marko led the first of the 30 Gregorian Masses he held in that chapel. For the next 30 days, he and the old bell ringer would go to the chapel in the office at 3 am and held a Gregorian Mass, listening to constant screaming and crying and moaning. The constant screaming and crying and moaning would always start at 1 am and stop when the sun came up. On the night of the 30th Gregorian Mass, as soon as they finished it the sounds stopped. And since that night no one heard any sound coming from there. Marko stayed there for a few more months I think, sleeping in the house and he told the bell ringer, 'See, I told you I'll sleep here'
P.s. English is not my native language so if I wrote something that doesn't make sense I'll try to clarify that and sorry in advance. If it's needed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_Masses
P.p.s. I am a fan of the strange, dark, and mysterious delivered in story format :)
